Product manager salary in India (2026): by level, city and company
Product manager salary in India in 2026, from APM to CPO, by city and company type, with sourced ranges, ESOP basics and how to negotiate your offer.
The average product manager salary in India is about ₹22–23 lakh a year, according to both AmbitionBox (₹23.3 lakh, 73k salaries, updated 16 October 2026) and Glassdoor India (₹22.5 lakh, about 24,000 salaries, accessed October 2026). At product-led tech companies the numbers are much higher: Levels.fyi puts median total compensation for PMs in India at about ₹44.8 lakh, because its data skews towards tech companies and includes stock. Your real number depends on level, city, company type and how much of the offer is equity.
Key takeaways
- Salary sites disagree by roughly 2x because they measure different things. AmbitionBox and Glassdoor cover every employer that uses the "Product Manager" title, including banks and IT services. Levels.fyi covers mostly tech companies and counts stock.
- Typical self-reported ranges run from about ₹14.5–16 lakh for associate product managers to ₹70–78 lakh for directors of product management (AmbitionBox, October 2026).
- Bengaluru pays the most at senior levels. The gap with Delhi NCR is small, and Mumbai is lower for senior PM and group PM titles.
- At Big Tech in India, a mid-level PM's total compensation can pass ₹1 crore, and stock is a large share of it. Early-stage startups usually trade cash for ESOPs.
- Value ESOPs as a lottery ticket with known terms, not as cash. Ask about vesting, strike price, exercise window and buyback history.
- Negotiate on level and scope first. Base pay follows from them.
Product manager salary in India by level
The table below uses AmbitionBox's "typical salary range" for each title. These are mostly self-reported fixed annual CTC figures from employees across all industries, so treat them as the middle of the market, not the top.
| Level | Typical experience | Typical range (AmbitionBox) | Top 10% earn more than | Data points, last updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Associate Product Manager | 1–10 years | ₹14.5–16.1 lakh | ₹23.5 lakh | 15.7k, 14 Oct 2026 |
| Product Manager | 2–13 years | ₹22.1–24.4 lakh | ₹36.1 lakh | 73k, 16 Oct 2026 |
| Senior Product Manager | 5–15 years | ₹36–39.8 lakh | ₹59.4 lakh | 22.6k, 15 Oct 2026 |
| Group Product Manager | 7–16 years | ₹36.2–40 lakh | not published | 2.3k, 14 Oct 2026 |
| Director, Product Management | 9–21 years | ₹70.6–78 lakh | not published | 1.2k, 13 Oct 2026 |
| Head of Product | 6–24 years | ₹27.9–30.9 lakh | ₹50.2 lakh | 6.1k, 14 Oct 2026 |
| Chief Product Officer | 5–23 years | ₹48.5–53.6 lakh | not published | 268, 28 Sep 2026 |
A few things in this table look odd, and the reasons matter when you read any salary data.
Head of Product averages less than Senior PM. "Head of Product" is a title that small companies hand out freely. The top 1% of heads of product on AmbitionBox earn more than ₹94.1 lakh, which tells you how wide the spread is.
Group PM looks flat against Senior PM. In Mumbai, many "group product manager" titles sit in banks and financial-services firms, where the role is often closer to a product-line or marketing manager. AmbitionBox shows Mumbai GPMs at ₹26.5–29.2 lakh (896 salaries) against ₹57.8–63.9 lakh in Bengaluru (588 salaries). In tech companies, GPM is usually a clear step above senior PM.
CPO data is thin. With 268 data points, many from small companies, it says little about CPOs at large startups.
Salary by years of experience
For the plain "Product Manager" title, AmbitionBox's experience bands (updated 16 October 2026) look like this:
| Experience | Average salary range |
|---|---|
| 1–3 years | ₹15.5–17.1 lakh |
| 3–6 years | ₹19.6–21.6 lakh |
| 6–9 years | ₹22.7–25.1 lakh |
| 9–12 years | ₹25–27.6 lakh |
| 12+ years | ₹27.3–30.1 lakh |
The curve flattens because pay rises mainly through promotion to senior PM, GPM and director, not through years in the same title. For senior PMs, the range climbs from ₹28.5–31.5 lakh at 3–6 years to ₹38.6–42.7 lakh at 12+ years (AmbitionBox).
Why salary sites disagree so much
Figures for the same role range from ₹14 lakh to ₹45 lakh depending on the source. Most of the gap comes from what each one measures:
| Source | What it mostly captures | PM figure in India | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox | Self-reported salaries across all industries, including banks, insurers and IT services | Average ₹23.3 lakh (73k salaries, updated 16 Oct 2026) | City and industry comparisons, non-tech employers |
| Glassdoor India | Anonymous self-reported salaries | Average ₹22.5 lakh; 25th–75th percentile ₹15.6–31 lakh; 90th percentile ₹40 lakh (23,952 salaries, accessed Oct 2026) | A second opinion on the overall market |
| Levels.fyi | Total compensation (base, stock, bonus) at tech companies | Median ₹44.8 lakh; 25th–75th percentile ₹29.3–67.8 lakh; 90th percentile ₹91.1 lakh (1,543 submissions, accessed 16 Oct 2026) | Tech companies, level-by-level offers, equity |
AmbitionBox's own industry split shows the effect. Product managers in software product companies report ₹27.2–30.1 lakh, against ₹17.1–18.9 lakh in banking (AmbitionBox). If you work in product-led tech, benchmark against Levels.fyi and the company-specific pages. If you are a product manager at a bank or a services firm, AmbitionBox is closer to your market.
Product manager salary by company type
Big Tech and global product companies
The highest PM compensation in India sits at global tech companies with large India product teams. On Levels.fyi, the top-paying companies for PMs in India are Uber (about ₹1.14 crore), Google (about ₹1.11 crore) and Atlassian (about ₹1.07 crore) in median total compensation, accessed 16 October 2026.
Google's India ladder on Levels.fyi (accessed 16 October 2026) shows how much stock matters:
| Google India level | Total compensation | Base | Stock (first year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| APM1 | ₹31.4 lakh | ₹31.4 lakh | none reported |
| L4 (Product Manager 1) | ₹65.6 lakh | ₹48.3 lakh | ₹15.1 lakh |
| L5 (Product Manager 2) | ₹1.3 crore | ₹64.7 lakh | ₹57 lakh |
At L5, nearly half the package is stock, so compare offers on base plus a realistic stock value.
Large Indian tech companies and unicorns
Indian consumer-tech and fintech companies pay well below Big Tech at the top, but well above the all-industry average. Levels.fyi figures, all accessed 16 October 2026:
| Company | Level | Total compensation | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flipkart | APM I / APM II | ₹21.1 lakh / ₹29.8 lakh | Levels.fyi Flipkart |
| Flipkart | PM I / PM II | ₹42.5 lakh / ₹59.8 lakh | same |
| Swiggy | PM I (L6) / PM II (L7) | ₹42 lakh / ₹52.9 lakh | Levels.fyi Swiggy |
| Swiggy | PM III (L8) | ₹73.5 lakh | same |
| Razorpay | PM / Senior PM | ₹48.8 lakh / ₹74.8 lakh | Levels.fyi Razorpay |
Medians across all levels were ₹53.6 lakh at Flipkart (149 submissions), ₹56.1 lakh at Swiggy and ₹60.4 lakh at Razorpay. Sample sizes per level are small, so a single offer can move these numbers.
Early-stage startups
There is no reliable public dataset for PM pay at seed and Series A startups in India, so we will not invent one. What is consistent is how early-stage offers are structured:
- Cash is lower, equity is higher. A seed-stage company with a small runway rarely matches unicorn base pay. The trade is a larger ESOP grant and a bigger role.
- Titles run ahead of pay. "Head of Product" at a 20-person startup may pay less than a senior PM at a unicorn. Judge the offer on cash, equity and scope, not the title.
- Pay varies by who funded them. Startups backed by large funds, or with founders who came from Big Tech, tend to pay closer to market.
If you are weighing a first or founding PM role, read our guide on what a founding product manager does before you compare offers.
Banks, insurers and IT services
These employers make up a large share of the "Product Manager" titles in India. On AmbitionBox, PM salaries at large banks range from ₹12.6–14.1 lakh at HDFC Bank to ₹18–19.9 lakh at ICICI Bank (accessed 16 October 2026). The work, often product-line ownership for cards, loans or deposits, is benchmarked differently from software PM roles.
Product manager salary by city
For the plain PM title, AmbitionBox shows a narrow spread between the big hubs (updated 16 October 2026):
| City | Product Manager | Senior Product Manager | Director, Product Management |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | ₹23.7–26.2 lakh | ₹38.7–42.8 lakh | ₹72.8–80.5 lakh |
| Gurugram | ₹22.6–25 lakh | ₹37.8–41.8 lakh | ₹63.7–71.7 lakh |
| Hyderabad | ₹23.6–26 lakh | not compared | not compared |
| New Delhi | ₹21.2–23.5 lakh | not compared | not compared |
| Mumbai | ₹21–23.2 lakh | ₹32.2–35.6 lakh | ₹60.2–70.7 lakh |
Sources: AmbitionBox pages for PM, senior PM and director of product management.
The gap widens at tech companies. On Levels.fyi, the median PM total compensation is about ₹58.8 lakh in Bengaluru against ₹38.7 lakh in Noida and ₹34.5 lakh in Chennai (accessed 16 October 2026). Bengaluru has more product-led companies and more Big Tech product teams, which pulls the median up.
Mumbai's lower senior numbers mostly reflect its mix of banks and financial-services firms. For remote roles, ask which pay band applies before you negotiate.
How ESOPs work in a PM offer
ESOPs (employee stock option plans) give you the right to buy company shares later at a fixed strike price. They are the biggest variable in startup offers, and the easiest place to be misled.
The questions to ask before you count ESOPs as part of your pay:
- How many options, and what percentage of the company is that? A number of options means nothing without the total share count.
- What is the vesting schedule? Four years with a one-year cliff is common. Check whether vesting is monthly, quarterly or yearly after the cliff.
- What is the strike price, and the latest fair market value? The gap is your paper gain, and it is also what you are taxed on when you exercise.
- How long do you have to exercise after leaving? A short window can force you to pay a large amount, plus tax, to keep shares you cannot yet sell.
- Has the company ever run an ESOP buyback? Buybacks are the only way most startup employees see cash before an IPO or acquisition. Ask for the history, not a promise.
How ESOPs are taxed in India
According to the Income Tax Department, ESOPs are taxed at two stages. When shares are allotted on exercise, the difference between the fair market value and what you paid is taxed as a salary perquisite. When you sell, you pay capital gains tax, with the exercise-date fair market value as your cost.
Employees of eligible startups, which the department defines by reference to Section 80-IAC, can defer the tax on the perquisite. It becomes due within 14 days of the earliest of three events: 48 months after the end of the assessment year of allotment, leaving the company, or selling the shares. Most startups do not hold the certificate this requires, so ask. Tax rules change often, so confirm the current position with a chartered accountant before you exercise.
A simple rule: if you could not afford for the ESOPs to be worth zero, the cash part of the offer is too low.
How to negotiate a product manager salary in India
Most PM offers have room to move, but rarely on base pay alone. Work through it in this order.
- Get the level right first. Levelling decides your band, and a level is far harder to change after you join. If your scope at your current company matches a senior PM, show it with outcomes, not years.
- Benchmark against the right source. Use company-specific Levels.fyi pages for tech companies, and AmbitionBox for banks and services firms. Bring two or three data points, not a screenshot of an average.
- Ask for the full breakdown. Indian CTC can include employer PF, gratuity, insurance, variable pay and joining bonuses. Ask for fixed pay, target variable, how variable was actually paid out last year, and equity, as separate lines.
- Let them name the number. If asked for your expectation early, give a range anchored on the role's band, not your current salary.
- Trade, don't just ask. If base is capped, ask for a joining bonus, more ESOPs, an earlier review, or a written promotion path with dates.
- Use competing offers honestly. A real second offer is your strongest lever. A bluff is easy to check in a small market like Indian product, and recruiters talk.
- Get it in writing. Level, title, fixed pay, variable, joining bonus, equity grant and vesting should all be in the offer letter.

Methodology and caveats
- Sources. Every figure on this page comes from public pages on AmbitionBox, Glassdoor India, Levels.fyi and the Income Tax Department, fetched in October 2026. Each figure links to its source and gives its update date where the source publishes one.
- What the numbers mean. AmbitionBox and Glassdoor report self-reported salaries, mostly fixed annual pay. Levels.fyi reports total compensation including stock and bonus. They are not directly comparable.
- Rounding. We converted figures to lakh and crore and rounded to one decimal place.
- Sample sizes. Company-level and senior-level figures rest on small samples and can shift quickly. Treat them as indicators, not quotes.
- What we left out. We found no reliable public data for PM pay at seed and Series A startups in India, or for typical ESOP grant sizes, so we have described those qualitatively.
Salary data tells you the market. Conversations with people who have recently negotiated the same kind of offer tell you what is actually possible. Product Circle members share PM roles and founder openings on the jobs and opportunities board, and can book office hours with founders and VCs who have hired before. If that sounds useful, see how to join.
